Eating on a Budget

By: Nancy Roeban

Introduction: You have won a $25.00 gift certificate to the restaurant of your choice for a dinner. You will choose an appetizer, salad, and beef or seafood for your dinner. The catch is, you'll need to stay within the $25.00 budget.

Prior Knowledge: The learners must be introduced to estimating.

Grade Level: 5 and 6

Task: The learners will be able to estimate, add, and subtract to stay within a budgeted amount.

Resources: The learners must have paper, pencil, and access to the computer to refer to one of the following Web sites:
Hard Rock Cafe-San Francisco, CA - <http://www.hardrock.com/locations/cafes/Cafes.aspx?Lc=SANF>
R.J. Grunt's - <http://www.studyworld.com/culinary/R.J.-Grunt_s.htm>
Menu-OnLine - <http://www.onlinemenus.com/>

Worksheet (HTML) / Worksheet (PDF)

Process:

  1. The learners will need to find the URL listed on the Web.
  2. The learners must read the menu and estimate the cost of foods selected from each section. The learners must choose an appetizer, a salad, beef or seafood main dish.
  3. The learners must then add the estimations to calculate their budget of $25.00.
  4. Once the estimations come within $25.00, then the actual costs will be added to prove that their meal does cost within the $25.00 budget.

Learning Advice: This lesson will allow the learners to practice estimating, use problem solving skills, and review addition and subtraction.

Evaluation: Each learner will be evaluated individually by showing their estimations, actual addition and subtraction work. The work should show that the meal is within the $25.00 budget.

Extensions: The tax and tip can be calculated for the meal.

Conclusion: The learner will be comfortable in estimation, and problem solving.
